Fishing in Hokitika

The West Coast boasts some of the best fishing in New Zealand and most Westland lakes and rivers are open to anglers all year round. The Hokitika River emerges from the Southern Alps and flows northwest, entering the Tasman Sea 64 km later at Hokitika. Most of the area is reserved as a National Park and your Hokitika fishing experience is enhanced by exceptionally beautiful, rugged scenery, including majestic mountain ranges and breathtaking gorges.

Hokitika provides excellent back country fishing for large rainbow trout and has a good population of brown trout. Some salmon enter the river between January and April and larger sea-run brown trout can be caught between September and December in the lower reaches as they enter the river chasing whitebait. This is a river that caters for all levels of fishing skills and also has a number of tributaries that provide a range of different fishing experiences.
